Around forty, your skin starts producing more of a fatty acid that breaks down into a compound called 2-nonenal. That's the thing people mean when they say someone "smells old." Nobody tells you, but everybody notices.
It isn't sweat and it isn't dirt. It's an oil, so water and ordinary soap don't lift it. Scented soap and body wash stack a fragrance on top; an hour later the fragrance is gone and the nonenal is still there.
